Where the chart shows the sky at your birth, the numbers show the patterns encoded in your name and date.
Numerology often aligns closely with your witch archetype: certain life path numbers tend to resonate with specific paths, and reading the two together sharpens both. Your personal year number also connects to the Sacred Calendar. Knowing the numerological theme of your current year adds another layer to how you read the wheel of the year and plan your practice.

What is numerology?
Of the four self-knowledge tools in Discovery, numerology is the one I came to last, and the one that surprised me most. I already knew my natal chart by the time I calculated my life path number. What I had not expected was how much the numbers confirmed what the chart had suggested, and how clearly they filled in the gaps it had left.
Numerology is one of the oldest continuous divinatory traditions. Its roots run through Pythagorean philosophy and Hebrew Kabbalah, and it has been practised for centuries outside of formal structures, which may be part of why it has always found a home in folk and solitary practice. What distinguishes it from the natal chart, practically speaking, is what it requires: nothing but your name and your birth date. No exact birth time. No clear sky. Just the numbers already encoded in the name and date you were given.

What do the numbers mean?
Each number from one to nine carries its own theme and energy. The three master numbers (eleven, twenty-two, and thirty-three) sit above the standard reductions and bring intensified meaning. The table below summarises the core character of each.

What is numerology?

How is your life path number calculated?
Your life path number is calculated from your full date of birth by reducing each component (day, month, year) to a single digit, then adding those digits together and reducing the total. For a birth date of 14 March 1990: 1+4=5 (day), 3 (month), 1+9+9+0=19 → 1+9=10 → 1 (year), and 5+3+1=9: a life path 9. Master numbers (11, 22, 33) are not reduced further. Grimoire performs the calculation automatically.
What's the difference between life path, expression, and soul urge numbers?
Each number reads a different layer. Your life path number is calculated from your birth date and describes the broad theme of your life's journey. Your expression number is calculated from every letter of your full birth name and describes your natural abilities and how you engage with the world. Your soul urge number is calculated from the vowels in your name and describes your inner motivations: what your heart is moving toward. Master numbers are 11, 22, and 33. When a calculation produces one of these as a final or intermediate total, numerologists do not reduce them further; the number is read as-is, with intensified meaning.
