SCENT MAGIC

Ritual Oil Blending & Scent Magic

Sacred scent begins with intention.

Scent Magic draws from two other tools to make every blend intentional. The ingredient library is built on the same botanical data as the Herbology compendium, so when you choose mugwort for a blend, you can see its planetary ruler, elemental correspondence, and traditional uses alongside its aromatic notes. Before you begin, Grimoire checks your Apothecary stock automatically, highlighting what you have and flagging what you need.

If you're looking for proven recipes rather than building from scratch, the Spells & Oils library offers traditional oil and incense formulas you can follow or adapt. And if you need to source new ingredients, the Shop carries curated botanicals from trusted suppliers.

What's Inside

Three-Step Wizard

Set your magical intention first: protection, love, clarity, abundance, banishment, devotion. Then choose your blend type: oil, incense, spray, or salve. Then layer your botanicals.

Ingredient Pyramid

The pyramid structures your blend by note: base, heart, and top. Each position has a different magical and aromatic role. Grimoire shows you which ingredients fit where and why.

Magical Correspondences

Every ingredient shows its magical properties, planetary rulership, and elemental correspondence alongside its aromatic notes: so your blend works on both planes.

Recipe Library

Save every blend you create to your personal recipe library. Name it, tag it, add notes. Your collection grows with your practice.

Cross-Referenced with Apothecary

Before you begin a blend, Grimoire checks your Apothecary stock. Ingredients you have are highlighted. Ingredients you're low on are flagged. Prepare before you begin.

Definition

What is scent magic?

Scent magic is the practice of using aromatic herbs, resins, oils, and hydrosols as agents of magical work. It draws on the deep tradition of incense in religious and devotional practice, on folk-magical recipes for anointing oils and ritual baths, and on the understanding of how scent shapes mood, memory, and ritual atmosphere.

The Scent Magic wizard in Grimoire is a structured tool for building blends that work on both planes (the aromatic and the magical) using the same ingredient library as the Herbology compendium. Every ingredient carries its planetary ruler, elemental correspondence, and traditional magical use alongside its aromatic notes, so a blend can be designed for purpose, not just for fragrance.

I make oil blends primarily for candle work and altar dressing: a protective oil rubbed into a black candle before a banishing, a devotional blend for the altar cloth on Brigid's feast day. The one I return to for Brigid has changed very little over the years: frankincense at the base, rosemary and dried heather in the heart. It smells like the beginning of the work.

The Note Pyramid

How does the note pyramid work?

Traditional perfumery balances three layers (top, heart, and base) each with a distinct aromatic and magical role. A well-made blend has all three. The table below summarises what belongs where, and what each layer contributes to the working.

Safety

A note on safety.

Most essential oils should not be applied to skin undiluted. Standard practice is to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, fractionated coconut) at concentrations between one and three per cent for general use. Some oils (bergamot and other citruses) are photosensitising and should not be applied to skin that will see direct sunlight. Some, like pennyroyal and tansy, are not safe in pregnancy. Some resins, like dragon's blood, should not be burned without ventilation.

The Scent Magic library flags these safety considerations on individual ingredients, but they are a starting point rather than a substitute for professional guidance. If you are pregnant, on medication, or have sensitive skin, consult a qualified aromatherapist before topical use.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is scent magic?

Scent magic is a branch of magical practice that works through aromatic materials: the ritual burning of incense, the anointing of candles, tools, and skin with oil blends, and the use of botanical preparations to set and hold a working's atmosphere. The Scent Magic wizard in Grimoire guides the construction of these blends through a three-step process: intention first, format second (oil, incense, spray, or salve), then ingredient selection structured by the note pyramid. Every ingredient carries its magical correspondences alongside its aromatic notes, so the blend works on both planes.

What's the difference between an oil, an incense, and a spray?

All three carry the same magical intent through different physical mediums. An oil blend is meant for anointing: applied to the skin, candles, or objects to mark them with the working. An incense blend is meant for burning: its smoke disperses the intent through the air and consecrates a space. A spray (sometimes called a hydrosol or asperges blend) is meant for cleansing or quick atmosphere change, usually water-based, sometimes alcohol, applied with a fine mist. The Scent Magic wizard supports all three, plus salves for blends meant to stay close to the skin.

What is the note pyramid in perfumery?

The note pyramid is a structural model from traditional perfumery, used to balance how a scent unfolds over time. Top notes are the bright, volatile materials you smell first; they fade within minutes. Heart notes are the body of the blend, holding for hours. Base notes are the heavy, fixative materials that anchor everything else and persist longest. A well-made blend has all three. Scent Magic uses this same structure to help you build blends that work magically as well as aromatically.

Can I substitute ingredients in a blend?

Yes, and learning to substitute well is a meaningful part of the practice. Each ingredient in the Scent Magic library is tagged with its magical correspondences and aromatic family, so you can find equivalents in either direction. If a recipe calls for sandalwood and you have none, the library will suggest base notes with similar correspondences, and you can read the full magical context for any substitute in the Herbology compendium before you commit.

Are essential oils safe to apply directly to skin?

Most essential oils should not be applied to skin undiluted. Pure essential oils are highly concentrated and can cause irritation, sensitisation, or allergic reaction at full strength. Standard practice is to dilute essential oils in a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, fractionated coconut) at concentrations between one and three per cent for most uses. A few oils (bergamot and other citruses) are also photosensitising, meaning skin treated with them should avoid direct sunlight. The Scent Magic library flags these safety considerations on individual ingredients. If you have sensitive skin or are pregnant, consult a qualified aromatherapist before topical use.

Do I need to use essential oils, or are dried herbs enough?

Both work, and many of the most powerful traditional blends use dried herbs and resins rather than essential oils. Essential oils are concentrated and convenient; dried herbs and resins carry the whole-plant essence and have been the basis of magical scent work for thousands of years. The choice often comes down to format: incense works best with dried materials, oils work best with essential oils diluted in a carrier. A serious apothecary tends to keep both.

How does Scent Magic connect to the rest of Grimoire?

Scent Magic draws on the same library as the Herbology compendium, so every ingredient comes with its full magical context. Before you start a blend, Grimoire checks your Apothecary stock to highlight what you have. Saved blends are stored in your personal recipe library and can be referenced from the Spell Builder when composing a working. And if you want to follow proven traditional recipes rather than building from scratch, the Spells & Oils library is one tap away.
