Sunflower: Magical Properties & Uses

Sunflower is the herb of solar joy, of the devotion that turns always toward the light, and of the clear, generous abundance of the summer sun at its height. Its primary magical uses are in workings of happiness and the brightening of a situation that has become dim or grey, in solar deity workings, and in any working that requires the energy of unambiguous, generous abundance. The seeds are used in prosperity workings; the petals in joy and happiness spells; the whole flower placed on the altar for sun ritual. It is also a herb of loyalty and the sustained devotion that follows the same source of warmth over time.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is primarily a nutritional and culinary plant of immense importance. Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, selenium, and unsaturated fats; sunflower oil is one of the most widely used cooking oils in the world. The seeds have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties attributable to their vitamin E and phenolic acid content. Sunflower petals have mild expectorant properties and have been used in folk cough preparations. The plant has also been studied for phytoremediation (the ability to draw heavy metals from contaminated soil), where it has shown remarkable effectiveness.

The sun made botanical: always turning its great golden face toward the light. Heliotropism is real in young sunflowers, though the mature plant fixes its position. The sunflower is native to the Americas and was a sacred plant of the Aztec and Inca civilisations, where it represented the sun deity. Aztec priestesses wore sunflower crowns and carried sunflower images in ceremonies. It reached Europe in the 16th century with the Spanish and was immediately cultivated across the continent. In Russian folk tradition it became associated with warmth, harvest abundance, and devotion. Culpeper, writing before its full integration into European magical tradition, does not cover it: it is more fully treated in American folk magic traditions.
