Scorpio season arrives every year as the wheel tips fully into the dark, and it always carries the same reputation: the most intense, the most psychological, the most uncomfortable stretch of the zodiac. In 2026 that reputation is more than earned, because this particular Scorpio season opens with two planets already walking backwards. It is the deep water of the year, and this year the water is especially still and especially deep.

Before the practical guidance, the usual honesty, because it is the thing that separates Grimoire from the rest of the astrology shelf. Astrology is a symbolic language for timing and reflection, not a set of forces pushing your life around. The Sun moving into Scorpio does not transmit intensity into your week. What the season offers is a shared frame, a seasonal mood agreed on by a long tradition, that you can choose to work within. Used that way it is genuinely useful. Treated as fate, it becomes an excuse. This guide takes the first path.

The dates that matter in 2026

The Sun enters Scorpio on 23 October and stays until 22 November, when it crosses into Sagittarius. That is the season proper. What makes 2026 unusual is everything moving inside it.

Mercury stations retrograde in Scorpio on 24 October, almost exactly as the season opens, and stations direct again on 13 November. Venus has been retrograde since early October and spends the first part of the season reversing out of Scorpio back into Libra around 25 October. For a stretch in late October, both the planet of thought and the planet of love and value are moving backwards at once. The cazimi, the moment Mercury meets the Sun at the heart of the retrograde, falls on 4 November at twelve degrees of Scorpio, and it is the clearest single point in the whole season. The Full Moon in Scorpio around 9 November is the emotional peak.

The shape of the season, then, is a long inward pull through late October and early November, a moment of piercing clarity at the cazimi, and a gradual turn back outward once Mercury and Venus both station direct in mid-November.

What the season asks

Scorpio's themes are the ones most people would rather not sit with: death and what survives it, power and who holds it, desire, secrecy, the things kept in the dark. The season's gift, if you choose to receive it, is permission to look at exactly those things while the rest of the year looks away.

With Mercury retrograde laid over the top, the invitation sharpens. Retrograde Mercury is a revising planet, better suited to reviewing than launching, and in Scorpio it turns that review inward and downward. This is poor timing for signing contracts or starting something that needs clear forward communication, and excellent timing for the work Scorpio actually wants: shadow practice, divination, ancestor work, the honest accounting you have been putting off. The season hands you the conditions and then, with the cazimi, hands you a window of unusual clarity to see by.

Working with Scorpio season as a witch

This is the most witch-aligned season of the year, which is why it falls across Samhain. The practices that suit it are the dark-half practices, and the calendar and the sky agree for once.

Divination deepens. Scorpio rules the hidden, and scrying, tarot, and pendulum work all gain a certain weight in this season. The cazimi on 4 November is the single best day of the whole stretch for a serious reading, a twenty-four-hour window of clarity inside the murk.

Shadow work has its season. If you have been meaning to turn toward the disowned parts of yourself, this is the time the wheel supports it. Scorpio does not flinch, and for a few weeks you do not have to either.

Release and transformation. Scorpio is the death-and-rebirth sign, and the waning energy of the dark half supports banishing and letting go. The Mercury retrograde adds a useful caveat: this is a season for releasing and reviewing, not for building. Compost now. Plant later.

Go gently on the retrograde. With both Mercury and Venus reversed in late October, expect the classic snarls: crossed wires, resurfaced exes, second thoughts about money and worth. None of it is doom. It is the season asking you to revisit rather than rush. Back up your work, read the contract twice, and let old feelings surface without acting on every one.

The season turns

By mid-November the pressure eases. Mercury stations direct on 13 November and Venus follows soon after, and the long inward season begins, slowly, to release its grip. What was murky starts to clarify, and the work done in the deep water, the divination, the shadow practice, the honest reckoning, comes back up with you. Then on 22 November the Sun crosses into Sagittarius, the dark gives way to a little fire, and the year exhales. Scorpio season asks a lot. It also gives a lot, if you are willing to go down into the water and look.

Questions

When is Scorpio season 2026? Scorpio season 2026 runs from 23 October, when the Sun enters Scorpio, to 22 November, when it moves into Sagittarius. It opens with Mercury stationing retrograde on 24 October and Venus already retrograde, making this an unusually inward and reflective Scorpio season.

Why does Scorpio season feel so intense? Scorpio's traditional themes are the difficult ones: death, power, desire, secrecy, and what is kept hidden. The season offers a shared frame for facing them while the rest of the year looks away. In 2026 the intensity is heightened by Mercury and Venus both being retrograde at the season's start.

What witchcraft suits Scorpio season? Dark-half practices suit it best: divination, scrying, shadow work, ancestor work, and release or banishing. The season falls across Samhain, so sky and calendar align. The Mercury cazimi on 4 November is the clearest single day for a serious divinatory reading.

What does Mercury retrograde in Scorpio mean for 2026? Mercury retrograde in Scorpio (24 October to 13 November 2026) favours reviewing over launching and turns reflection inward and downward. It is poor timing for contracts and new ventures, and good timing for shadow work, divination, and honest internal accounting. The cazimi on 4 November offers a window of clarity within it.

However you mark the deep water this year, the season rewards looking rather than flinching. If you want to go further into the divination it favours, the guide to scrying is a fitting place to begin.
