Magical Properties
Underworld work, prophecy, spirit contact
Henbane is the herb of trance, of contact with the dead, and of the altered states that enable genuine magical perception. Its use in the historical flying ointment was not merely symbolic: the combination of alkaloids produces dissociative and visionary states when absorbed. For modern practitioners it is a herb to work with symbolically and in minimal quantities in incense rather than consumed or applied: the margin between magical dose and toxic dose is narrow and the consequences of miscalculation are serious. It is included in the apothecary as a historical reference point and a genuine connection to the deep tradition of trance work.
Mundane
Mundane Uses
Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) contains tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, scopolamine, and atropine) at concentrations high enough to cause serious toxicity and death. It was used medicinally in antiquity as a sedative, analgesic, and antispasmodic, and medieval surgeons used it as a component of surgical anaesthesia. These alkaloids remain in clinical use: scopolamine for motion sickness; atropine for cardiac and ophthalmic applications. Henbane is not used in contemporary herbal practice and should only ever be treated as a historical and magical reference herb.

History
Folklore & History
Henbane is perhaps the most notorious herb in the witch's apothecary. Devil's Eye, insane root, stinking nightshade: its folk names tell the story of a plant feared and valued in equal measure. It is the most credible candidate for the smoke of the Delphic Oracle: the psychoactive alkaloids in henbane smoke produce exactly the dissociative visionary states the ancient sources describe. It was the primary ingredient in the flying ointment of the early modern witch trials, and its ability to produce sensations of flight and transformation is pharmacologically explicable. It was also used in medieval beer as a bittering agent before hops became standard: Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law of 1516, was partly a ban on henbane ale.
