Lavender: Magical Properties & Uses

Lavender is among the most versatile herbs in the Western apothecary: it can stand in for almost any purpose where a calming, clarifying, or purifying energy is needed. Its primary magical uses are peace, sleep, and the clearing of mental disturbance, making it one of the few herbs that works as readily in shadow-work contexts as in love workings. The peace lavender induces is not passive: it quiets the restless mind so that clearer intention can form beneath it. Lavender has one of the longest unbroken histories of medicinal use in European herbalism. Culpeper used it as a primary remedy for nervous complaints and head ailments. It was applied to wounds during wartime when antiseptics were unavailable. The Romans used lavender extensively (its name derives from the Latin lavare, to wash) adding it to bathing water, laundry, and medicines. It features in Culpeper's Complete Herbal (1653), where he recommends it for headaches, epilepsy, and diseases of the mind. The Anglo-Saxons used it in protective sachets, and the early modern cunning folk tucked it into love tokens and sleeping pillows throughout Britain.
