Magical Properties
New beginnings, protection, purification, fertility, love
Birch is the herb of new beginnings after difficulty, of clearing, and of the tender protection extended to new life. Where oak gives enduring strength and rowan gives protective brightness, birch gives the gentler protection of the mother for the newly born. It is used in purification and cleansing workings, particularly at the start of a new year, a new project, or a new phase of life. The besom made from birch twigs is used to sweep negative energy from a space before ritual. In workings connected to the Otherworld and spirit travel, birch is the appropriate tree for practitioners beginning this kind of work.
Mundane
Mundane Uses
Birch (Betula pendula and related species) has a long history of medicinal use in Northern Europe and Siberia. Birch sap (harvested in early spring) is a traditional tonic in Scandinavian, Baltic, and Russian folk medicine, consumed for liver and kidney support. Birch leaf tea is used as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory in European herbal medicine and is approved in Germany for urinary tract infections. Birch bark contains betulinic acid, which has demonstrated antitumour and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies. The wood is used in saunas and as a source of birch tar, a traditional antiseptic and waterproofing material.

History
Folklore & History
The Lady of the Woods: first letter of the Ogham alphabet, slender and silver-barked as moonlight itself, birch is the magic of beginnings and of new life reclaimed from difficulty. In Celtic tradition its Ogham symbol Beth is associated with inception and with the clearing away of what has been to make space for what will be. Birch besoms (brooms made from birch twigs) were the traditional tool for sweeping out the old year and driving out evil spirits at the turn of the year in British folk tradition. In Siberian shamanic tradition the birch is the world tree; shamans climbed a birch pole in their trance journeys between the worlds.
