Magical Properties
Protection, healing, breaking curses, lust, exorcism
Nettle is primarily a protection and boundary herb. It is the herb of the defended threshold: placed around a space, nettle marks it as not to be crossed without invitation. This applies to psychic as much as physical protection: nettle in a working drives back interference and removes unwanted presences. It is also a hex-breaking herb, working by the same logic as agrimony but with considerably greater force. The fire association and Mars rulership indicate workings of active energy: nettle is not passive protection but active repulsion. In courage workings, holding nettle and accepting the sting is itself a traditional act of magical fortification.
Mundane
Mundane Uses
Nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the most nutritionally dense wild plants available in temperate climates. Young leaves are rich in iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C, concentrations far higher than most cultivated vegetables. It has been used as a spring tonic herb for centuries. Medicinally it is used for anaemia, allergic rhinitis (where it has clinical support), and urinary tract health. The roots are used in herbal medicine for benign prostatic enlargement. Nettle fibre was used to make textiles before flax and hemp became widely available.

History
Folklore & History
Nettle is among the most ancient of human companion plants: wherever humans have settled and disturbed soil, nettle follows. It has been used as food, medicine, and textile fibre for at least seven thousand years; Neolithic peoples made nettle cloth. In Scandinavian tradition nettles were associated with Thor, and burning them during a storm was a practice for summoning his protection. British folk tradition held that nettles growing near a house indicated a site of old habitation. The fairy tale of the wild swans (in which a princess must weave nettle shirts to free her brothers) captures the combination of pain, endurance, transformation, and ultimate healing that characterises the plant.
