Magical Properties

Love, protection during pregnancy, protection

Raspberry leaf is the herb of female strength, of the protection of women and children, and of the sustaining of what is most cherished and vulnerable. Its primary magical uses are in protective workings specifically for women and children, in blessings for pregnancy and the early weeks of a new child's life, and in workings dedicated to the goddess in her mother aspect. It is appropriate as an offering at Imbolc, the festival of the returning light and of new beginnings. In love workings it draws gentle, nurturing love: the kind that endures and nourishes rather than burns. It is one of the safest herbs in the apothecary and can be used freely outside of early pregnancy.

Mundane

Mundane Uses

Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) is widely used in pregnancy preparation. Studies have found that raspberry leaf taken in the third trimester may shorten the second stage of labour and reduce the need for medical interventions, though results are not conclusive. It should only be used in the third trimester of pregnancy, not in earlier stages. In early pregnancy it should be avoided. It is rich in vitamins and minerals including iron and vitamin C. As a general tonic herb and beverage tea it is considered safe for most adults and is widely used as an everyday herbal tea.

History

Folklore & History

The herb of the mother: gentle, nourishing, and quietly strong. Raspberry leaf has been given to women throughout pregnancy and labour in European and North American folk traditions for longer than any written record covers. It appears in every major European herbal from the medieval period onward specifically in the context of women's reproductive health. Culpeper recommended it for the mouth and throat and for women's complaints. In British folk tradition it was drunk as a standard everyday tea by women in rural communities. In Irish tradition the young shoots were eaten as a spring tonic. The association with the female body and particularly with the transition of childbirth is as consistent as any association in the Western herbal tradition.
