Magical Properties
Purification, protection, strength, vitality, prosperity
Turmeric is the herb of purification, vitality, and the colour of wealth: the deep gold that in South Asian tradition signifies the sun, abundance, and the blessing of the divine. Its primary magical uses are in purification workings (particularly the purification of the physical body before ritual), in prosperity workings where solar abundance rather than earthy accumulation is the quality being drawn, and as an offering herb for solar deities and goddesses of power and protection. The gold colour it leaves on skin and cloth is itself a form of the working: a marking of sacred status and solar alignment. In protection workings it is used to ward off malevolent spirits.

Mundane Uses
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is one of the most extensively researched medicinal spices. Curcumin, its primary active compound, has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory studies, and has been investigated for applications in arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and cognitive decline. The clinical evidence for many claimed benefits is promising but inconsistent, partly because curcumin is poorly absorbed without piperine (from black pepper). It is used in Ayurvedic medicine for a wide range of conditions including joint pain, digestive complaints, and skin conditions. It is generally safe at dietary doses; very high supplemental doses may affect iron absorption and interact with blood-thinning medications.

History
Folklore & History
The golden root of Hindu wedding ceremonies and four-thousand-year-old medicines: turmeric is one of the most deeply embedded culinary and sacred plants in South Asian culture. It is used in Hindu religious ceremony to mark auspicious occasions, including marriage, where it is applied to the skin of the bride and groom in a pre-wedding ritual (haldi). It is sacred to the goddess Durga. In Ayurvedic medicine it has been in continuous use for at least four thousand years. It appears in ancient Assyrian texts and was traded along the spice routes of the ancient world. In traditional Indian cosmology it purifies the body, protects against evil spirits, and connects the wearer to the solar.
