Magical Properties

Protection, love, faery work, truth

Primrose is the herb of early spring, of Ostara and the first lengthening days, and of the careful opening of the door to the fae. It is used in workings that invite good fortune and fairy blessing, placed on doorsteps and windowsills at Imbolc and Ostara to welcome the returning light. In love workings the primrose draws young, sweet love rather than the more intense energies of rose or hibiscus. In healing workings it addresses ailments of the nerves and of the spirit, the exhaustion that comes at the end of a long winter. It should be approached with the respect owed to a fae-associated plant: graciously and with clear intent.

Mundane

Mundane Uses

Primrose (Primula vulgaris) and cowslip (Primula veris) have both been used in European herbal medicine. Culpeper recommended primrose extensively for palsy, cramp, and rheumatic complaints. Cowslip flowers were used in sedative preparations for insomnia and anxiety; the root of cowslip is expectorant. Both plants contain saponins and flavonoids. Some people develop contact dermatitis from handling primrose plants. Primrose and cowslip preparations are no longer widely used in contemporary herbal medicine, having been largely replaced by better-researched nervines. The flowers are edible.

History

Folklore & History

A small pale flower of British hedgerows said to attract the Fae: lay a posy of primroses at the doorstep on May Eve and the household will be blessed through the summer. In Somerset tradition a bunch of primroses on the first day of May was said to invite the fairies in. Conversely, a path of primroses from the threshold to a fairy ring was said to create a gateway. In Welsh tradition the primrose was one of the first flowers of Persephone's return. The flower is closely associated with Ostara and early spring magic throughout British folk tradition. Culpeper associated it with Venus and recommended it for palsy and nervous complaints.
