Every year, when the Sun moves into Leo in late July, the year's tone shifts again. Cancer Season's inward, emotional, lunar quality gives way to something warmer, more expressive, and more willing to be seen. Leo Season is the part of the year that asks you to step out of the interior work Cancer required and put something into the world.

In 2026, Leo Season runs from 22 July to 22 August, and it carries an unusual depth. The South Node enters Leo on 26 July (the same week the season opens) which means the astrological context of Leo Season 2026 is not simply "express yourself." It is: which Leo patterns are you ready to release? A total solar eclipse on 12 August intensifies this. A Jupiter cazimi on 29 July offers the season's single most concentrated day of creative and expansive energy. Leo Season 2026 is both the invitation to create with courage and the composting of what has been performance rather than genuine creation.

What is Leo Season?

Leo Season begins when the Sun enters the fixed fire sign of Leo and ends when it moves into Virgo around 22 August. During this period, solar energy takes on the qualities Leo is known for: self-expression, creative courage, leadership, play, and the willingness to occupy space visibly. Leo is the only sign ruled by the Sun itself (not a planet, the star) and this makes it the most solar season of the year.¹

Where Cancer Season was lunar, receptive, and concerned with the inner life and home, Leo Season is solar, expressive, and concerned with the outer world and how the practitioner shows up in it. The emotional intelligence cultivated through Cancer's work becomes the fuel for Leo's visible output. What you came to understand about yourself in the quiet of Cancer Season, Leo Season asks you to bring forward.

As a fixed sign, Leo sustains and deepens what it initiates. The creative work of Leo Season is not quick or superficial; it is the kind of work that requires commitment, repetition, and the willingness to keep showing up even when the response is uncertain.

What makes Leo Season 2026 significant?

Leo Season 2026 is defined by three overlapping transits, all of them pointing toward the same question: what is genuinely yours to create, and what has been performance?

The South Node enters Leo

On 26 July 2026 (four days into Leo Season) the South Node enters Leo and the North Node enters Aquarius, beginning an 18-month nodal cycle that will run through March 2028.² The South Node represents release, catharsis, and what is being composted from the collective repertoire. With the South Node in Leo, the next 18 months are asking the world to release Leo's shadow: the performance that substitutes for creation, the need for external validation that displaces internal authority, the leadership that is really just ego in disguise, the identity built on being watched rather than being real.

This does not diminish Leo's gifts. Leo's genuine gifts (creative courage, generous leadership, authentic self-expression, the capacity to inspire) are available and valuable in exactly the same measure. What the South Node in Leo is composting is the distorted version of those gifts. Leo Season 2026 is the ideal time to ask which version you have been offering.

Jupiter cazimi and the Full Moon in Aquarius

On 29 July 2026, Jupiter reaches its annual cazimi (its exact conjunction with the Sun) at 6°24 Leo, at the same time the Full Moon rises in Aquarius.³ This is the season's most concentrated single moment. Jupiter cazimi is a burst of Jupiterian clarity and expansive energy, the moment in Jupiter's annual cycle when its vision is most lucid and its gifts most accessible. In Leo, this means: creative ambition, confidence in the work, the generosity that is Leo at its best. The Full Moon in Aquarius directly opposite holds the collective context: community, innovation, the bigger purpose the individual creativity serves. The Leo/Aquarius polarity is fully active on this day. It is an excellent day for creative intention-setting, for making a decision about a creative project, or for naming aloud what you are building.

The total solar eclipse in Leo

On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse occurs at 20°01 Leo: the second eclipse in the Leo/Aquarius series that began with the Aquarius eclipse in February.⁴ This eclipse falls on the South Node, which means it is a release eclipse: it closes a chapter rather than opening one. The themes of the eclipse involve what is being completed around Leo energy in your life: creative projects that have run their course, ways of presenting yourself that no longer fit, a leadership style that is ready to evolve. Solar eclipses carry effects for the subsequent six months; what completes or shifts around the 12 August eclipse will continue developing through February 2027.

Eclipse windows (the ten days or so around the eclipse) are generally not periods to force decisions or initiate major new undertakings. They are periods to observe what is surfacing and to allow completions to complete.

Mercury direct

Leo Season opens with an immediate astrological gift: Mercury stations direct in Cancer on 23 July (the day after Leo Season begins) ending the retrograde that defined Cancer Season's communication and emotional review. The plans, projects, and decisions that were under review during June and July become available for forward motion as Leo Season starts. This is a clean handoff.

Leo Season themes for your practice

The South Node in Leo gives Leo Season 2026 a particular character. The themes are not simply "be bold"; they are more discerning than that.

Creative courage over creative performance. The most important Leo Season question is: what are you making because you genuinely have to make it, and what are you making because you want to be seen making it? The distinction matters. Genuine creative courage (the work that is true to you regardless of response) is exactly what the South Node in Leo is freeing up. The performance is what is being composted. This is the season to make things for reasons that survive the absence of an audience.

Generous leadership. Leo's gift in leadership is inspiration: the leader who makes others feel capable, seen, and proud of what they are doing together. Leo's shadow is the leader who needs the room's attention more than the room needs their guidance. The South Node in Leo is specifically asking for the former to expand and the latter to release.

The discipline of output. Leo Season is not just about the impulse to create; it is about the discipline of actually producing. Fixed fire sustains. The creative courage the season offers is not inspiration alone; it is the capacity to keep showing up to the work when the inspiration has temporarily left and only the commitment remains.

Play as serious practice. Leo rules play, recreation, and joyful creativity. In a culture that treats work as the only legitimate form of effort, this is a countercultural reminder. The witch who brings genuine playfulness to her practice (the lightness, the experiment, the willingness to not know yet) is working in Leo's best energy.

Leo Season rituals

A creative courage working for 29 July. The Jupiter cazimi day is the season's single most potent moment for creative intention-setting. On 29 July, take something you have been holding back (a project unshared, a piece of writing unsent, a work uncommitted to) and name aloud what it is and why you are moving forward with it. Light a gold or yellow candle. Write the intention specifically: not "I want to be creative" but the specific thing you are doing and why it is genuinely yours. The Full Moon in Aquarius that evening is the container for the intention; let both the Sun's Leo energy and the Moon's Aquarius illumination hold it.

A release working for the eclipse window (8–16 August). In the days around the 12 August eclipse, work with what is completing rather than what is beginning. A burning working (from the Spells cluster) is appropriate: write what is finishing around Leo energy in your creative life (a project that has run its course, a way of showing up that no longer fits, a need for validation you are ready to outgrow) and burn it cleanly. Let the South Node eclipse do its composting work consciously.

A daily sun acknowledgment. Leo Season is ruled by the Sun. A simple morning practice for the season: step into direct sunlight (when available) and acknowledge it explicitly, not as metaphor, but as the actual star that sustains your life. Leo Season's solar energy is most available when the practitioner is in direct relationship with literal sunlight. Ten seconds of deliberate attention each morning builds the season's energy more reliably than elaborate ritual.

Working with Leo Season in your daily practice

The Leo Season journal questions are different from Cancer's. Where Cancer asked what does my inner life need? and what family pattern is asking to be looked at?, Leo asks: What am I making? What have I been holding back from making, and why? What would it cost to put it into the world? Which version of my creative self is genuine, and which has been a performance?

The South Node in Leo makes the final question the most important one this particular Leo Season. Not "how do I express myself more boldly" but "what in my creative or self-expressive life is ready to be released so something more genuine can take its place?" That is the work the astrology is supporting. The eclipse on 12 August will surface answers whether or not you ask the question consciously. Asking it consciously gives you more choice about what to do with what surfaces.

If you want a dedicated space to track your seasonal practice and journal on these questions, Grimoire is built for exactly that.
