The Deity Work Library
Deity Work.
On recognising, approaching, and building a relationship with the divine.
Working with deity is one of the most personal threads of a witch’s practice, and one of the least written about with care. The pieces here approach the subject without sensationalism and without prescription. They cover how to recognise a deity reaching out, how to begin a relationship, how to build an altar that means something, and how to discern between presence and projection. A patron deity is not assigned. It is encountered. These guides are written for that encounter.
Deity work is the practice of forming intentional relationships with gods, goddesses, and divine beings from any of the world's mythological and spiritual traditions. It is a central aspect of many pagan paths (particularly polytheistic traditions such as Hellenic, Norse, Celtic, and Kemetic practice) and is increasingly common among eclectic solitary witches who work with patron deities alongside other practices.
Approaching deity work with respect and intentionality matters. The beings you work with are not tools for your practice: they are presences with their own character, preferences, and expectations. A genuine relationship is built over time through offering, prayer, research into the deity's mythological context, and attentive listening.
The posts in this category cover how to begin deity work, how to identify a patron deity, building and maintaining altar practices for specific deities, navigating relationships with multiple gods, and working with specific figures from various traditions.
